Schulz Nursery was founded in 1958 by Mr. Hugo Schulz. Originally, the business was started as a wholesale operation but local demand led the nursery to become a retail garden center, as more and more customers learned of its existence. In the beginning, hardly any funds were available for advertising but word of mouth by happy customers helped to spread the news and the business continued to grow, thanks to the efforts of hard working and dedicated employees.

We continue the traditions and commitment to quality of the Schulz family. Great plants and great service are hallmarks of Schulz Nursery. The Gardener’s Gazette newsletter was started by Jim Schulz. The Dutch Sale and the Shady Deal were also creations from the Schulz era and we are proud to continue the tradition.

Today, Larry Walker is at the helm. Larry spent many years in the newspaper business and retired in 2006, from his post as the publisher of the San Antonio Express News. He has turned his attention and talents to making Schulz Nursery the best nursery in Texas not just the best in South Texas as we have called it in the past. Steve and Amanda Spalten, having spent the past 12 years running Schulz, are working with Larry to bring the joys of gardening and the knowledge and talent of the Schulz Nursery staff to South Texas and beyond.
